Terry

It was just around suppertime when I crept out to the back shed for my nightly drink and caught Mary necking with one of the Forrester boys.

“It definitely grabs me,” Flip said. “You start by telling us that the girl’s fooling around with somebody the narrator doesn’t like and also that this Terry guy’s a secret alcoholic.”

Lawrence looked at Flip in stupefied alarm. “How did you know Terry’s an alcoholic?”

“Because he’s out sneaking drinks in the back shed,” Flip said. “That’s what alcoholics do.”

Lawrence’s face held its expressionless stare for a moment before it rose into a delighted, eager grin. “Well I’ll be darned—alcoholics do drink in secret, don’t they? That line really just came to me as I was developing Terry’s voice. I’ve never been one of those writers who plans everything since I find that the novel flows more easily if I just let the characters ‘take over’ in each scene.” He accompanied this last phrase with a jerky set of air quotes.

Flip wasn’t sure how to respond to this and kept reading:
